Samba Genealogical Tree

From the ¨Samba-de-Roda¨ created in the Recôncavo Baiano, already considered Human non-Material Heritage by UNESCO; going through the ¨Rodas de Samba¨ from the houses of the ¨Tias¨ from Bahia at Praça Onze, in Rio de Janeiro; the ¨jongo¨, a dance from the Bantu, created by slaves in the Senzalas, which has in the ¨Semba¨ of Angola, its African ancestor, the versions for the original Samba are many. Versions and polemics aside, the fact is that Samba for us is not only a type of music which comes from an African musical diaspora, but it is a cultural manifestation, that is made as a summary and source, at the same time of this rich cultural variety from Brazil.

Samba Genealogical Tree

Samba translates itself as the greatest cutural identity icon which is present in kinds of music such as Partido Alto, Maracatu, Samba-Enredo, Samba- Canção, Samba-de-Breque, Bossa Nova, Capoeira, Samba- Reagge, and in several branches of this genealogical tree. However, it is on the samba schools culture, brought up in the 20´s, that it had its greater social contrtibution and worldwide projection, spreading from Rio de Janeiro to the world in an outstanding way.
Therefore, we argue that samba (1) consists of a large family of rhythms and performances of the African Diaspora in Brazil, (2) its gens are inscribed in most batucadas, increasingly performed by musical groups, samba groups and samba schools in carnivals and popular events in the stages, avenues and other public spaces of several cities of the world, (3) has its origin in the batuque, term generically used to designate all music of slave, heard in senzalas.
Our previous understanding is that samba-reggae is samba, bossa nova is samba, afro-samba is samba, samba-coco is samba, and cabula is also samba. In other words, just as the term Batuque generally denoted all the manifestations of Negroes enslaved in Brazil, the term polysemico samba houses a large family of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, performances and manifestations. This family, which graphically appears to be represented in this "Samba Genealogical Tree".
