ABOUT

Exploring the theme “samba in the world”, the 9th International meeting of Samba and Carnival will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 23rd February to 4th March 2014, at the Centro de Letras e Artes of the UNIRIO, Federal University of Rio.

The event is an artistic residency where there will be a cultural exchange of ideas and skills between Brazilian Sambistas and foreign Sambistas, who have come to take part in Rio Carnival. The event will host an opening party with performances of national and international groups, samba music, dance and costume making workshops, as well as lectures and round the table discussions with important representatives from Carnival groups in Rio.

The event is aimed at Carnival practitioners from all over the world; professionals or amateurs, revellers, residents or visitors to Rio de Janeiro.

ARTISTS:
Bateria percussion: Ailton Nunes ( G.R.E.S. Mangueira)
Samba Dance: Fabio Costa ( G.R.E.S. Unidos da Tijuca)
Making: Jamie Cezario ( Award winning carnival designer)
The project culminates in a street parade in the Praia Vermelha-Urca with a bloco “ Samba Global” that will take place on Tuesday 4th March.

The event is scheduled to begin at 4pm on Sunday 23rd February 2014. It is a gathering of various carnival personalities and Brazilian and foreign institutions, at a panoramic view spot at the Favela do Vidigal.

The 9th International Meeting of Samba and Carnival is an initiative of the “Portal do Carnival" project from UNIRIO- Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Partners involved are: the project Samba Global from CRIAR - Reference Centre of Information in Arts, Entertainment and Brazilian culture.

FÁBIO COSTA

Fábio Costa

Choreographer of the famous samba school Unidos da Tijuca, he is responsible for the choreography of the dramatized sections of the school, the community groups, the flag barer and master of ceremony.

 

AILTON NUNES

Ailton Nunes

Master of percussion (bateria) from the traditional Samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueira, he is responsible for the famous bateria base drum number one. He is an award winnig artist including best bateria at the special group division during carnival 2011.

 

JAMIE CEZARIO

Jamie Cezario

Jamie Cezario is a Carnival designer with 20 years of experience in carnival parades in Rio.
Architect, professor and carnival researcher, he was part of the Carnival Institute in Rio de Janeiro from 2006 to 2010. He has worked as coordinator and judge of carnival schools in different cities in Brazil.
As carnival designer he has worked with many schools in Rio and Brazil, including Estacao Primeira de Mangueira.
Recently he was the first Brazilian carnival designer to have his work been acquired to the permanent collection of the Art Museum in Iowa/USA.
